The challenge focuses on target speaker extraction (TSE) from real-world conversational recordings in either English or Chinese, where the goal is to extract the speech of a target speaker in the presence of interfering speakers, background noise, and reverberation.
While modern TSE systems have achieved strong performance on simulated speech mixtures, their performance can degrade considerably on real-world recordings due to the mismatch between simulated training data and actual conversational environments. The Real-TSE Challenge was designed to advance TSE under these realistic conditions, using real far-field conversational recordings for evaluation.
The MERL team won Track 2 by focusing on training data and curriculum learning rather than introducing a new model architecture. Starting from a strong speech separation model, the team progressively trained the system on fully overlapping synthetic speech, simulated conversations, realistic far-field mixtures, and finally real conversational recordings. This approach reduced the token error rate (TER), measured at either the word (English) or character (Chinese) level, from 70% to 37% on the development set and achieved a final TER of 61.3% on the evaluation set, best among the 11 participating teams. The team also topped the leaderboard in terms of the aggregate ranking across the four measures evaluating intelligibility, target speaker presence rate, speaker similarity, and perceptual quality.
The team also investigated the reliability of the challenge metrics and demonstrated that neural network-based speaker similarity and predicted speech-quality scores could be substantially improved without a corresponding improvement in perceptual quality. Because learned metrics can be susceptible to adversarial attacks or optimization that exploits weaknesses in the metric itself, these findings highlight both the importance of realistic training data for real-world TSE and the need for robust evaluation metrics when developing speech extraction systems.
A paper summarizing the team's findings will be presented at the IEEE Spoken Language Technology (SLT) 2026 workshop, to be held in Palermo, Italy from December 13-16, 2026.

The IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE Challenge), started in 2013, has been organized yearly since 2016, and gathers challenges on multiple tasks related to the detection, analysis, and generation of sound events. This year, the DCASE 2026 Challenge received 421 submissions from 135 teams across seven tasks.
The MERL team won Task 2, Noise-aware Unsupervised Anomalous Sound Detection for Machine Condition Monitoring, which aims at building noise-robust systems for automatically detecting machine failure via microphones when only normal machine operating data is available for system development. Task 2 was by far the most popular out of the 7 DCASE 2026 tasks, with 51 teams submitting 168 entries. The MERL team's system was built around MERL’s recently proposed paradigm of noise-aware self-supervised learning, which extracts noise robust features leveraging two-channel recordings, in which one microphone is used to capture noise. Anomaly detection is then performed in the extracted denoised feature space using advanced score normalization. The team's best submission obtained a composite score of 70.24% on five evaluation machines, largely outperforming the 2nd best team's 65.45%.
MERL also participated in Task 4, Spatial Semantic Segmentation of Sound Scenes (S5) and placed 3rd out of 10 teams in separation performance. Our cascaded system consists of universal sound separation with source counting, source classification, and class-aware refinement, where the separation and refinement modules are built upon MERL's TF-Locoformer separation technology. Notably, the team's best submission obtained a label prediction accuracy of 76.92% on the evaluation set, largely outperforming the 2nd best team's 65.54%.

Technical Program

Jonathan Le Roux, Senior Team Leader and Distinguished Research Scientist, has been elected as the next Vice Chair of the AASP TC. His election reflects his longstanding contributions to the audio and acoustic signal processing community, his leadership in workshop and conference organization, and his significant impact across a wide range of research areas within the TC’s scope. Jonathan will serve a one-year term as Vice Chair, after which he will succeed Prof. Minje Kim (UIUC) as Chair of the AASP TC for a two-year term in 2027–28, helping steer the committee’s strategic initiatives and continued growth.

The GenDARA Challenge was organized as part of the Generative Data Augmentation (GenDA) workshop at the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP 2025), and held on April 7, 2025 in Hyderabad, India. Yoshiki Masuyama presented the team's method, "Data Augmentation Using Neural Acoustic Fields With Retrieval-Augmented Pre-training".
The GenDARA challenge aims to promote the use of generative AI to synthesize RIRs from limited room data, as collecting or simulating RIR datasets at scale remains a significant challenge due to high costs and trade-offs between accuracy and computational efficiency. The challenge asked participants to first develop RIR generation systems capable of expanding a sparse set of labeled room impulse responses by generating RIRs at new source–receiver positions. They were then tasked with using this augmented dataset to train speaker distance estimation systems. Ranking was determined by the overall performance on the downstream SDE task. MERL’s approach to the GenDARA challenge centered on a geometry-aware neural acoustic field model that was first pre-trained on a large external RIR dataset to learn generalizable mappings from 3D room geometry to room impulse responses. For each challenge room, the model was then adapted or fine-tuned using the small number of provided RIRs, enabling high-fidelity generation of RIRs at unseen source–receiver locations. These augmented RIR sets were subsequently used to train the SDE system, improving speaker distance estimation by providing richer and more diverse acoustic training data.

Acoustic perception is invaluable to humans and robots in understanding objects and events in their environments. These sounds are dependent on properties of the source, the environment, and the receiver. Many humans possess remarkable intuition both to infer key properties of each of these three aspects from a sound and to form expectations of how these different aspects would affect the sound they hear. In order to equip robots and AI agents with similar if not stronger capabilities, our research has taken a two-fold path. First, we collect high-fidelity datasets in both controlled and uncontrolled environments which capture real sounds of objects and rooms. Second, we introduce differentiable physics-based models that can estimate acoustic properties of objects and rooms from minimal amounts of real audio data, then can predict new sounds from these objects and rooms under novel, “unseen” conditions.

The LAP Challenge workshop and award ceremony was hosted by the 32nd European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 24) on August 29, 2024 in Lyon, France. Yoshiki Masuyama presented the team's method, "Retrieval-Augmented Neural Field for HRTF Upsampling and Personalization", and received the award from Prof. Michele Geronazzo (University of Padova, IT, and Imperial College London, UK), Chair of the Challenge's Organizing Committee.
The LAP challenge aims to explore challenges in the field of personalized spatial audio, with the first edition focusing on the spatial upsampling and interpolation of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). HRTFs with dense spatial grids are required for immersive audio experiences, but their recording is time-consuming. Although HRTF spatial upsampling has recently shown remarkable progress with approaches involving neural fields, HRTF estimation accuracy remains limited when upsampling from only a few measured directions, e.g., 3 or 5 measurements. The MERL team tackled this problem by proposing a retrieval-augmented neural field (RANF). RANF retrieves a subject whose HRTFs are close to those of the target subject at the measured directions from a library of subjects. The HRTF of the retrieved subject at the target direction is fed into the neural field in addition to the desired sound source direction. The team also developed a neural network architecture that can handle an arbitrary number of retrieved subjects, inspired by a multi-channel processing technique called transform-average-concatenate.

Technical Program
MERL will present 13 papers in the main conference on a wide range of topics including automated audio captioning, speech separation, audio generative models, speech and sound synthesis, spatial audio reproduction, multimodal indoor monitoring, radar imaging, depth estimation, physics-informed machine learning, and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). Three workshop papers have also been accepted for presentation on audio-visual speaker diarization, music source separation, and music generative models.
Perry Wang is the co-organizer of the Workshop on Signal Processing and Machine Learning Advances in Automotive Radars (SPLAR), held on Sunday, April 14. It features keynote talks from leaders in both academia and industry, peer-reviewed workshop papers, and lightning talks from ICASSP regular tracks on signal processing and machine learning for automotive radar and, more generally, radar perception.
Gordon Wichern will present an invited keynote talk on analyzing and interpreting audio deep learning models at the Workshop on Explainable Machine Learning for Speech and Audio (XAI-SA), held on Monday, April 15. He will also appear in a panel discussion on interpretable audio AI at the workshop.
Perry Wang also co-organizes a two-part special session on Next-Generation Wi-Fi Sensing (SS-L9 and SS-L13) which will be held on Thursday afternoon, April 18. The special session includes papers on PHY-layer oriented signal processing and data-driven deep learning advances, and supports upcoming 802.11bf WLAN Sensing Standardization activities.

The AVSE challenge aims to design better speech enhancement systems by harnessing the visual aspects of speech (such as lip movements and gestures) in a manner similar to the brain’s multi-modal integration strategies. MERL’s system was a scenario-aware audio-visual TF-GridNet, that incorporates the face recording of a target speaker as a conditioning factor and also recognizes whether the predominant interference signal is speech or background noise. In addition to outperforming all competing systems in terms of objective metrics by a wide margin, in a listening test, MERL’s model achieved the best overall word intelligibility score of 84.54%, compared to 57.56% for the baseline and 80.41% for the next best team. The Fisher’s least significant difference (LSD) was 2.14%, indicating that our model offered statistically significant speech intelligibility improvements compared to all other systems.

Research Areas: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Speech & AudioBrief- SANE 2023, a one-day event gathering researchers and students in speech and audio from the Northeast of the American continent, was held on Thursday October 26, 2023 at NYU in Brooklyn, New York.
It was the 10th edition in the SANE series of workshops, which started in 2012 and is typically held every year alternately in Boston and New York. Since the first edition, the audience has steadily grown, and SANE 2023 broke SANE 2019's record with 200 participants and 51 posters.
This year's SANE took place in conjunction with the WASPAA workshop, held October 22-25 in upstate New York.
SANE 2023 featured invited talks by seven leading researchers from the Northeast and beyond: Arsha Nagrani (Google), Gaël Richard (Télécom Paris), Gordon Wichern (MERL), Kyunghyun Cho (NYU / Prescient Design), Anna Huang (Google DeepMind / MILA), Wenwu Wang (University of Surrey), and Yuan Gong (MIT). It also featured a lively poster session with 51 posters.
SANE 2023 was co-organized by Jonathan Le Roux (MERL), Juan P. Bello (NYU), and John R. Hershey (Google). SANE remained a free event thanks to generous sponsorship by NYU, MERL, Google, Adobe, Bose, Meta Reality Labs, and Amazon.

The SDX2023 Challenge was hosted on the AI Crowd platform and had a prize pool of $42,000 distributed to the winning teams across two tracks: Music Demixing and Cinematic Sound Demixing. A unique aspect of this challenge was the ability to test the audio source separation models developed by challenge participants on non-public songs from Sony Music Entertainment Japan for the music demixing track, and movie soundtracks from Sony Pictures for the cinematic sound demixing track. The challenge ran from January 23rd to May 1st, 2023, and had 884 participants distributed across 68 teams submitting 2828 source separation models. The winners will be announced at the SDX2023 Workshop, which will take place as a satellite event at the International Symposium of Music Information Retrieval (ISMR) in Milan, Italy on November 4, 2023.
MERL’s contribution to SDX2023 focused mainly on the cinematic demixing track. In addition to sponsoring the prizes awarded to the winning teams for that track, the baseline system and initial training data were MERL’s Cocktail Fork separation model and Divide and Remaster dataset, respectively. MERL researchers also contributed to a Town Hall kicking off the challenge, co-authored a scientific paper describing the challenge outcomes, and co-organized the SDX2023 Workshop.

ICASSP is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS). ICASSP 2023 was held in the Greek island of Rhodes from June 04 to June 10, 2023, and it was the largest ICASSP in history, with more than 4000 participants, over 6128 submitted papers and 2709 accepted papers. Darius’s paper was first recognized as one of the Top 3% of all papers accepted at the conference, before receiving one of only 5 Best Student Paper Awards during the closing ceremony.

The IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE Challenge), started in 2013, has been organized yearly since 2016, and gathers challenges on multiple tasks related to the detection, analysis, and generation of sound events. This year, the DCASE2023 Challenge received over 428 submissions from 123 teams across seven tasks.
The CMU-MERL team competed in the Task 6A track, Automated Audio Captioning, which aims at generating informative descriptions for various sounds from nature and/or human activities. The team's system made strong use of large pretrained models, namely a BEATs transformer as part of the audio encoder stack, an Instructor Transformer encoding ground-truth captions to derive an audio-text contrastive loss on the audio encoder, and ChatGPT to produce caption mix-ups (i.e., grammatical and compact combinations of two captions) which, together with the corresponding audio mixtures, increase not only the amount but also the complexity and diversity of the training data. The team's best submission obtained a SPIDEr-FL score of 0.327 on the hidden test set, largely outperforming the 2nd best team's 0.315.

Perry Wang is the organizer of a special session on Radar-Assisted Perception (RAP), which will be held on Wednesday, June 7. The session will feature talks on signal processing and deep learning for radar perception, pose estimation, and mutual interference mitigation with speakers from both academia (Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Tech, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and industry (Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch, Waveye).

Technical Program
MERL is presenting 13 papers in the main conference on a wide range of topics including source separation and speech enhancement, radar imaging, depth estimation, motor fault detection, time series recovery, and point clouds. One workshop paper has also been accepted for presentation on self-supervised music source separation.
Perry Wang has been invited to give a keynote talk on Wi-Fi sensing and related standards activities at the Workshop on Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), which will be held on Sunday, June 4.
Additionally, Anthony Vetro will present a Perspective Talk on Physics-Grounded Machine Learning, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 8.

Machine learning can be used to identify animals from their sound. This could be a valuable tool for biodiversity monitoring, and for understanding animal behaviour and communication. But to get there, we need very high accuracy at fine-grained acoustic distinctions across hundreds of categories in diverse conditions. In our group we are studying how to achieve this at continental scale. I will describe aspects of bioacoustic data that challenge even the latest deep learning workflows, and our work to address this. Methods covered include adaptive feature representations, deep embeddings and few-shot learning.

The AASP TC's mission is to support, nourish, and lead scientific and technological development in all areas of audio and acoustic signal processing. It numbers 30 or so appointed volunteer members drawn roughly equally from leading academic and industrial organizations around the world, unified by the common aim to offer their expertise in the service of the scientific community.

While computer vision has made significant progress by "looking" — detecting objects, actions, or people based on their appearance — it often does not listen. Yet cognitive science tells us that perception develops by making use of all our senses without intensive supervision. Towards this goal, in this talk I will present my research on audio-visual learning — We disentangle object sounds from unlabeled video, use audio as an efficient preview for action recognition in untrimmed video, decode the monaural soundtrack into its binaural counterpart by injecting visual spatial information, and use echoes to interact with the environment for spatial image representation learning. Together, these are steps towards multimodal understanding of the visual world, where audio serves as both the semantic and spatial signals. In the end, I will also briefly talk about our latest work on multisensory learning for robotics.

The conference was held October 11-14 in a virtual format. The Best Poster Awards and Best Video Awards were awarded by popular vote among the conference attendees.
The paper proposes a new method for isolating individual sounds in an audio mixture that accounts for the hierarchical relationship between sound sources. Many sounds we are interested in analyzing are hierarchical in nature, e.g., during a music performance, a hi-hat note is one of many such hi-hat notes, which is one of several parts of a drumkit, itself one of many instruments in a band, which might be playing in a bar with other sounds occurring. Inspired by this, the paper re-frames the audio source separation problem as hierarchical, combining similar sounds together at certain levels while separating them at other levels, and shows on a musical instrument separation task that a hierarchical approach outperforms non-hierarchical models while also requiring less training data.
