  • Biography

    After completing his doctoral studies, Petros joined Rice University as a Postdoctoral associate until Jan. 2009, when he joined MERL. Since joining MERL, Petros has contributed in areas such as high-speed video acquisition, ultrasonic imaging, and privacy-preserving secure embeddings. His interests include signal acquisition and processing, signal representations and compressive sensing. He is also a visiting scholar at Rice University and an Associate Editor of IEEE Signal Processing Letters.

Topics to be presented include recent advances in speech recognition and audio processing; graph signal processing; computational imaging; and privacy-preserving data analysis.

        ICASSP is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the world's largest and most comprehensive technical conference focused on the research advances and latest technological development in signal and information processing. The event attracts more than 2000 participants each year.

      • In this talk, we will present a framework for analyzing, in the high-dimensional limit, the exact dynamics of several stochastic optimization algorithms that arise in signal and information processing. For concreteness, we consider two prototypical problems: sparse principal component analysis and regularized linear regression (e.g. LASSO). For each case, we show that the time-varying estimates given by the algorithms will converge weakly to a deterministic "limiting process" in the high-dimensional limit. Moreover, this limiting process can be characterized as the unique solution of a nonlinear PDE, and it provides exact information regarding the asymptotic performance of the algorithms. For example, performance metrics such as the MSE, the cosine similarity and the misclassification rate in sparse support recovery can all be obtained by examining the deterministic limiting process. A steady-state analysis of the nonlinear PDE also reveals interesting phase transition phenomena related to the performance of the algorithms. Although our analysis is asymptotic in nature, numerical simulations show that the theoretical predictions are accurate for moderate signal dimensions.

      • Petros Boufounos is a recipient of the 2015 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award for the paper that he co-authored with Mark A. Davenport, Michael B. Wakin and Richard G. Baraniuk on "Signal Processing with Compressive Measurements" which was published in the April 2010 issue of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing. The Best Paper Award honors the author(s) of a paper of exceptional merit dealing with a subject related to the Society's technical scope, and appearing in one of the Society's solely owned transactions or the Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing. Eligibility is based on a five-year window: for example, for the 2015 Award, the paper must have appeared in one of the Society's Transactions between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2014.

  • Internships with Petros

    • MM1017: Multimodal Active Sensing

      MERL is looking for a highly-motivated intern to work at the intersection of optical depth sensing and radar. The successful candidate will have expertise in computer vision, optical depth sensing and 3D tracking, and/or radar array signal processing. Familiarity with other active sensing methods and modern signal processing techniques, such as compressive sensing and sparse optimization, are a plus. The expected duration of the internship is 3 months with a possibility of extension, and the start date is flexible. Extra consideration will be given to candidates that are immediately available.
