Biography
Kyeong Jin's research interests include transceiver design, performance analysis of spectrum sharing systems, and design of cooperative communication systems. Since joining MERL, he has contributed in areas such as reliable communications, cooperative distributed communications, physical layer security, and GPS-aided signal processing for power grid systems. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Communications Letters. Now he is an editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications. He also serves as a leading guest editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC): Special Issue on Spatial Modulation for Emerging Wireless Systems.

IEEE ICC is one of two IEEE Communications Society’s flagship conferences (ICC and Globecom). Each year, close to 2,000 attendees from over 70 countries attend IEEE ICC to take advantage of a program which consists of exciting keynote session, robust technical paper sessions, innovative tutorials and workshops, and engaging industry sessions. This 5-day event is known for bringing together audiences from both industry and academia to learn about the latest research and innovations in communications and networking technology, share ideas and best practices, and collaborate on future projects.

Research Areas: Communications, Electronic and Photonic Devices, Signal ProcessingAbstractA Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a planar structure that is engineered to have properties that enable the dynamic control of the electromagnetic waves. In wireless communications and networks, RISs are an emerging technology for realizing programmable and reconfigurable wireless propagation environments through nearly passive and tunable signal transformations. RIS-assisted programmable wireless environments are a multidisciplinary research endeavor. This presentation is aimed to report the latest research advances on modeling, analyzing, and optimizing RISs for wireless communications with focus on electromagnetically consistent models, analytical frameworks, and optimization algorithms.

IEEE PES-GM is the flagship conference for the IEEE Power and Energy Society. The work was done in collaboration with Hongbo Sun, K. J. Kim, and Daniel Nikovski from MERL, and Tong's advisor, Prof. Le Xie from Texas A&M University.

There paper titled "GPS Spoofing Detection and Mitigation in PMUs Using Distributed Multiple Directional Antennas," described a technique to rapidly detect and mitigate GPS timing attacks/errors via hardware (antennas) and signal processing (Kalman Filtering).

CI1733: ML for GNSS-based Applications
MERL is seeking a highly motivated, qualified intern to work on machine learning for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications. The ideal candidate is working towards a PhD and is expected to develop innovative machine learning technologies to increase accuracy and integrity of GNSS-based positioning systems. Candidates should have strong knowledge about as many as possible of GNSS signal processing for multipath mitigation, handling RINEX data, neural network and learning techniques, such as feature extraction, deep machine learning, reinforcement learning, domain adaptation, and distributed learning. Proficient programming skills with PyTorch, Matlab, and C++, and strong mathematical analysis will be additional assets to this position. Candidates in their junior or senior years of a Ph.D. program are encouraged to apply.
