  • Abstract:

    To maximize the operating energy efficiency of any wireless communication link requires a global optimization not only across the entire block diagram, but also including the selected signal modulation and aspects of the link operating protocol. Achieving this global optimization is first examined for the transmitter, receiver, and baseband circuitry. Then the important aspects of signal modulation necessary to access these circuit optimizations, with examples, are presented, followed by the correspondingly important protocol aspects needed. A metric called modulation-available energy efficiency (MAEE) compares proposed signals for compatibility with high energy efficiency objectives.

    Earl is a graduate of UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UC Davis. His experience in RF circuits, signals, and systems extends more than 40 years. He has learned across this career that a thorough understanding of physical fundamentals is essential to avoid making huge mistakes, providing an extremely useful check on mathematical derivations and computer simulations (not to mention young engineers!). Within his career he has founded two Silicon Valley startups, the first one doing modulated direct digital frequency synthesis in 1986 which merged with Proxim in 1991. The second start-up, Tropian, did switch-based RF transmitters from 1996 and was acquired by Panasonic 10 years later. He retired from Panasonic in 2008 as a Corporate Technology Fellow. Among other activities, he now also serves as a co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Eridan Communications.

    Earl has more than 80 US patents, and is frequently an invited speaker at conferences worldwide. He is a double author with Cambridge University Press, first with Practical Digital Wireless Signals (2010), and also with Dynamic Power Supply Transmitters (2015). He is an IEEE MTT Distinguished Microwave Lecturer since 2013. He also is appointed by MTT to the IEEE Green-ICT Initiative Steering Committee.
