High precision milling simulation using Adaptive Distance Fields.

MERL's research focus in the Computational Geometry area is focused on high precision milling machine simulation. MERL's methods and technology are based on Adaptive Distance Fields (ADF) which can represent a 2 or 3 dimensional surface to extremely high precision over a large milling volume, using a very small memory footprint and limited computational resources. This enables the technology to be used in applications that range from desktop simulation to embedded processors. Research efforts use our ADF technology and methods drawn from advanced computational geometry to develop new milling applications such as force model based feed rate scheduling and path planning.
