Zafer received his B.S. in E.E. from Gazi Uni., Ankara, M.S. in BME and Ph.D. in EE from NJIT. He was awarded the Hashimoto Prize in 2002. He worked at AT&T Shannon Labs in 1999, and joined MERL in March 2001 where he is currently with the Digital Communications and Networking Group. His research areas include home networking, routing and data broadcasting in wireless sensor networks, impulse radio precision ranging and positioning, traffic self-similarity and biomedical signal processing. He has published numerous conference and journal papers in the relevant topics. He has significant contributions to emerging MPEG-21 and ZigBee standards. He holds one European and one US patent, and has 15 pending.
