Dr. Evandro Gouvea joins MERL from Carnegie Mellon University, where he was involved in the design and development of Sphinx-4, a Java platform speech recognition system, as well as the maintenance of the open source Sphinx family of decoders. He was also part of Project LISTEN, a project that uses speech recognition to help elementary school-aged children to learn how to read. Prior to Carnegie Mellon, he worked at Vocollect, Inc., where he was responsible for building the company's speech recognition system, used in their core product, a wearable computer for warehouses.
