      Technical Program

      MERL will present 13 papers in the main conference on a wide range of topics including automated audio captioning, speech separation, audio generative models, speech and sound synthesis, spatial audio reproduction, multimodal indoor monitoring, radar imaging, depth estimation, physics-informed machine learning, and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). Three workshop papers have also been accepted for presentation on audio-visual speaker diarization, music source separation, and music generative models.

      Perry Wang is the co-organizer of the Workshop on Signal Processing and Machine Learning Advances in Automotive Radars (SPLAR), held on Sunday, April 14. It features keynote talks from leaders in both academia and industry, peer-reviewed workshop papers, and lightning talks from ICASSP regular tracks on signal processing and machine learning for automotive radar and, more generally, radar perception.

      Gordon Wichern will present an invited keynote talk on analyzing and interpreting audio deep learning models at the Workshop on Explainable Machine Learning for Speech and Audio (XAI-SA), held on Monday, April 15. He will also appear in a panel discussion on interpretable audio AI at the workshop.

      Perry Wang also co-organizes a two-part special session on Next-Generation Wi-Fi Sensing (SS-L9 and SS-L13) which will be held on Thursday afternoon, April 18. The special session includes papers on PHY-layer oriented signal processing and data-driven deep learning advances, and supports upcoming 802.11bf WLAN Sensing Standardization activities.

      Petros Boufounos is participating as a mentor in ICASSP’s Micro-Mentoring Experience Program (MiME).

    • MERL hosted its annual Women in Science luncheon. Carole-Jean Wu, PhD, joined our event to lead a talk on Scaling AI Computing Sustainably. She shared key challenges across the many dimensions of AI, on what and how at-scale optimization can help reduce the overall carbon footprint of AI and computing. Dr. Wu is a Research Scientist and Technical Lead Manager at Meta AI / FAIR. Prior to Meta/Facebook, she was an Associate Professor at ASU.

      As part of this celebration, MERL will be making a donation to Science Club for Girls in Cambridge, MA.

      Science Club for Girls' mission is to foster excitement, confidence, and literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for girls and gender-expansive youth from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women-in-STEM mentors.

      Organization

      Petros Boufounos is serving as General Co-Chair of the conference this year, where he has been involved in all aspects of conference planning and execution.

      Perry Wang is the organizer of a special session on Radar-Assisted Perception (RAP), which will be held on Wednesday, June 7. The session will feature talks on signal processing and deep learning for radar perception, pose estimation, and mutual interference mitigation with speakers from both academia (Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Tech, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and industry (Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch, Waveye).

      Anthony Vetro is the co-organizer of the Workshop on Signal Processing for Autonomous Systems (SPAS), which will be held on Monday, June 5, and feature invited talks from leaders in both academia and industry on timely topics related to autonomous systems.

    • Anthony Vetro has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), the research and development arm for Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in the U.S. In his role, Vetro will oversee all aspects of the lab’s operations; manage and direct its long-term goals, growth and return on investment; and collaborate closely with Mitsubishi Electric’s research counterparts in Japan on advancing the company’s global smart society and sustainability initiatives.

      Vetro previously served as Vice President & Director of MERL. In this role, he contributed to the strategic direction of the company where he established new research programs and led teams in a variety of emerging technology areas. He succeeds Richard C. Waters, a founding MERL member, who was CEO for 24 years, and will continue as chairperson.

      “Anthony has played a significant role in shaping MERL’s evolution as a premier research lab that drives innovation across all of our U.S. business units,” said Mike Corbo, chief representative for the America’s region. “His leadership will further advance our long-term vision to integrate our cross-industry products, services and technologies, and enable the interconnection of people-centric technology and systems that will help realize a truly sustainable smart society.”

      Vetro began his MERL career in 1996, where he conducted research in the area of multimedia signal processing, with a focus on video compression. His research contributed to the transfer and development of several technologies that were integrated into Mitsubishi Electric products, including digital television receivers and displays, surveillance and camera monitoring systems, automotive equipment, as well as satellite imaging systems. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from New York University – Tandon School of Engineering and is an IEEE Fellow.

      “MERL celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, where we recognized our many innovations and the people that made them possible,” said Vetro. “I’m looking forward to working even more closely with our teams to further strengthen relationships among our business units and serve as technological bridge for product innovation throughout the next 30 years and beyond.”

    • Sustainability took center stage at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas from Jan 5-8. Anthony Vetro, VP & Director at MERL, participated in a panel on "Renewable Energy, Renewable World" at CES 2023, where he spoke on renewable energy solutions including electric vehicles, energy resource management, and energy-efficient heat pumps.

      The panel was moderated by Hayden Fields, Senior Reporter at Morning Brew. Other panelists included Andrea Murphy (Director of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability, Panasonic) Enass Abo-Hamed (CEO, H2GO Power), and Giovanni Fili (Founder and CEO, Exeger).

Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award will be Prof. Alex Waibel (CMU/Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), “For pioneering contributions to spoken language translation and supporting technologies.” Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), which has become the new sponsor of this prestigious award in 2022, extends our warmest congratulations to Prof. Waibel.

    • MERL's research on scene-aware interaction was recently featured in an IEEE Spectrum article. The article, titled "At Last, A Self-Driving Car That Can Explain Itself" and authored by MERL Senior Principal Research Scientist Chiori Hori and MERL Director Anthony Vetro, gives an overview of MERL's efforts towards developing a system that can analyze multimodal sensing information for highly natural and intuitive interaction with humans through context-dependent generation of natural language. The technology recognizes contextual objects and events based on multimodal sensing information, such as images and video captured with cameras, audio information recorded with microphones, and localization information measured with LiDAR.

      Scene-Aware Interaction for car navigation, one target application that the article focuses on, will provide drivers with intuitive route guidance. Scene-Aware Interaction technology is expected to have wide applicability, including human-machine interfaces for in-vehicle infotainment, interaction with service robots in building and factory automation systems, systems that monitor the health and well-being of people, surveillance systems that interpret complex scenes for humans and encourage social distancing, support for touchless operation of equipment in public areas, and much more.     • Anthony Vetro has been elected as a Member-at-Large to serve on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS). He will serve a three-year term from January 2022 until December 2024.

      The Board of Governors (BoG) is the governing body that oversees the activities of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. The SPS BoG has the responsibility of establishing and implementing policy, and receiving reports from its standing boards and committees. Members-at-Large represent the member view point in the Board decision-making. They typically review, discuss, and act upon a wide range of items affecting the actions, activities, and health of the Society.

    • Anthony Vetro gave a keynote at the inaugural IEEE Conference on Autonomous Systems (ICAS), which was held virtually from August 11-13, 2021. The talk focused on challenges and recent progress in the area of robotic manipulation. The conference is sponsored by IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) through the SPS Autonomous Systems Initiative.

      Abstract: Human-level manipulation continues to be beyond the capabilities of today’s robotic systems. Not only do current industrial robots require significant time to program a specific task, but they lack the flexibility to generalize to other tasks and be robust to changes in the environment. While collaborative robots help to reduce programming effort and improve the user interface, they still fall short on generalization and robustness. This talk will highlight recent advances in a number of key areas to improve the manipulation capabilities of autonomous robots, including methods to accurately model the dynamics of the robot and contact forces, sensors and signal processing algorithms to provide improved perception, optimization-based decision-making and control techniques, as well as new methods of interactivity to accelerate and enhance robot learning.

    • Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that the company has developed what it believes to be the world’s first technology capable of highly natural and intuitive interaction with humans based on a scene-aware capability to translate multimodal sensing information into natural language.

      The novel technology, Scene-Aware Interaction, incorporates Mitsubishi Electric’s proprietary Maisart® compact AI technology to analyze multimodal sensing information for highly natural and intuitive interaction with humans through context-dependent generation of natural language.     • Anthony Vetro gave a keynote at the inaugural IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence Circuits and Systems (AICAS), which was held in Hsinchu, Taiwan from March 18-20, 2019. The talk focused on edge intelligence for optimized systems and high-performance devices.

      Abstract: The combination of IoT sensing, edge computing and AI algorithms is creating new opportunities to use real-time data to optimize system capabilities and increase device performance. In the manufacturing domain, edge intelligence allows us to realize various forms of anomaly detection, predict the lifetime or maintenance schedule of components, and adaptive learn improved control policies. Connected cars will benefit from edge intelligence to improve safety and optimize traffic flows. Additionally, the parameters of a circuit can be automatically tuned using data-driven machine learning techniques to increase efficiency and performance. This presentation highlights the numerous benefits of the edge intelligence framework, and identifies several open challenges and issues.
