MERL conducts application-motivated basic research and advanced development in optimization, control and signal processing. As an open corporate lab, we collaborate with other research organizations, publish our results and measure our performance by the impact we have on Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and the world.
A nonlinear dynamical system is one described by nonlinear differential or difference equations. MERL's interest is to improve the performance of MELCO products and technology through the application and extension of nonlinear dynamical systems theory. We are developing new analytical methods and computational tools, and are focused on applications including mixing in fluids and the design of minimum-fuel trajectories for space probes, both of which exploit nonlinearity and chaos in highly creative and deeply mathematical ways.
